Glowing Cities Under a Night Time Sky

Enjoy!

by Ettubrute
"On my night time flight back to SF from Amsterdam, I noticed that the lights from cities were making the clouds glow. Really spectacular and ethereal - it was really seeing the impact of urban environments from a different perspective. Each glow or squiggle represents one town or city!

Luckily the flight was half empty, so I was able to set up an improvised stabilizer mound made up of my bags, pillows, and blankets for my camera to sit on.

We were around the midwest at the beginning of the clip, and there were fewer cities once we hit the rockies. the bridge at the end is the san mateo bridge.

Technique: 1600iso; beginning - 1 (30sec) exposure / 45secs, end - 1 (4sec) exposure / 10 secs; total elapsed time: around 3 hours?"

Music: Bloc Party - Signs

OMA wins competition for the Taipei Performing Arts Centre

David Basulto/ ArchDaily writes

"After a two-phase international competition (with offices such as Morphosis, Abalos+Sentkiewicz, MVRDV and Zaha Hadid), OMA has been awarded the first prize in the design competition to build the new Taipei Performing Arts Centre.

The project, led by Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren, is based on 3 theaters (1 x 1,500 seats - the round one, 2 x 800 seats - cubes) which are plugged into a central cube cladded with corrugated glass. This scheme puts all the stage accommodations of the 3 theaters into the central cube, allowing for more flexibility as theaters can be used independently or combined, expanding the possibilities for experimental performances - an art which is very strong on the country. This new arrangement of stage and seatings includes a public circulation that exposes parts of the backstage to the public"

My opinion... from only seing these images below... hilariously ugly.

Parking Tower - A VW Beetle hive

The CarTowers is a 20-story tall car storage tower in Wolfsburg, Germany. It’s owned & operated by Volkswagen, which explains why all the cars - around 800 at full capacity - are VWs. The CarTower has often been used to illustrate public parking garages of the future even though it’s a private endeavor that merely allows VW to save space.

Amazing stop motion music video

Kathrin sent me this link to an amazing stop motion music video, "My Drive Thru". It was directed by Psyop, originally, for an ad campaign for Converse. It builds on a paper doll chain theme, where people are connected by their Converse shoes.

The production took about four months to complete as well as the use of nearly 10,000 paper cutouts of the artists.

Amazing!

It reminded me of stop motion in the world of books

25 year Apple evolution - 1984 to 2009

Today is the 25th anniversary of the first Apple computer. As you all know, Apple has ever since introduced ground breaking design features.

Below I've selected some of my Apple milestones from Webdesigner Depot:

Macintosh - 1984

The Macintosh, for most of us, was the computer that started it all. In the first demonstration of the product at MacWorld, Steve Jobs pulled the very first Macintosh out of the bag and demonstrated product features that most of us take for granted now.

iBook - 1999

The first generation of the iBook featured a clamshell design and wireless networking. Image: eLanso

iMac G3 Tray-Loading, Bondi Blue - 1998

In doing away with the tower and keeping the computing power, Apple completely revolutionized the desktop computer industry. The iMac G3’s were available in a bouquet of various colours. Johnathan Ive, the designer who was later the mastermind of the Cube, designed the iMac G3. Image: Wikipedia

PowerMac G3 Blue and White - 1999

This shared the hardware with its predecessor but little else. The case was redesigned to bring it in line with the new iMac. Image: Apple.com

PowerMac G4 Cube - 2000

This 8″ cube garnered a lot of kudos in the short time that it was in production. The designer of the Cube, Jonathan Ive, won several international awards for its design. Image by Apple.com

iPod - Generation One - 2001

The first generation of the iPod was debuted in 2001 to rave reviews and a very eager market. Image: Wikipedia

iMac G4 - 2002

The iMac G4 was produced from 2000-2004 and represents the first iteration of Apple’s desire to “slim down” the components necessary for an out of the box personal computer experience. It was nicknamed the iLamp because of its swiveling monitor. Image: Marc Burr

iBook G4 - 2004

A slot loading drive and a lack of translucent design characterized this release of the iBook. Image: Apple.com

Generation 4 - 2004

The fourth generation saw the Touch Wheel replaced with the Click Wheel from the iPod Mini. A special Harry Potter edition and U2 edition were released in this generation. Image: BatteriesForIpod

Fifth Generation - 2005

2005 brought this iteration of the iPod, unofficially dubbed iPod Video. Image: Les Numeriques

iPod Nano - 2005

iMac (Intel Based) - Aluminum - 2007

The current iMac models pack all of the components necessary to the operation of a computer behind the monitor in a perfect realization of “slim design”. Image: Wikipedia

iPhone - 2007

The iPhone is the cellular phone of choice of nearly every tech aficionado, even winning over BlackBerry fanboys with its touch screen and wide range of cheap and free applications available from the iTunes AppStore. Image: Apple.com

MacBook Pro - 2008

The most recent Pro design is available in a 15″ or 17″ model. Images via Apple.com

I love building architectural models. And I love playing out stories for every model I build. I always imagine what it would be like being one of the model people in our - JAJA - models.

Just like "Little people in the city" or in "Godzilla's perspective"

My Currency, My Money

The artist Hanna von Goeler says:

"The interstitial quality of money as it travels from person to person is the point of departure for "My Money, My Currency"... It is about currency - the concept of currency, what it is and who has it... As such currency is all about exchange - of ideas, ethics, culture etc. As an artist, currency is my medium of exchange with you. My currency is paitings and drawing, my mind, ideas and spirit."

"Painting on money also gives me some sense of power to determine - rater than be controlled by - money's function within society"

Godzilla perspective

Keith Loutit has created a series of videos shot in tilt-shift which makes it look like a miniature world! I guess it's one of the closest thing we'll get to Godzilla perspective.

When I see his videos, I start to imagine what it would be like if one of our architectural models would come to life!

Below here is one of Keith Loutit's videos of Monster Truck Rally.

The Image Fulgurator - The reverse spy camera

Created by Julius Von Bismarck the Image Fulgurator is technically like a camera... but in reverse.

Instead of taking pictures it projects images.

Rather than spying on people the Image Fulgurator intervenes and literally sneaks in an image onto other people's pictures.

Sweet!

Here's the Image Fulgurator in action at the Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin
