Nintendo evolution

As a kid of the 80's, the Nintendo has always been apart of my upbringing... And it still is.

I borrowed a Wii the other day. Looking forward to testing it out.

At first glance the Wii seems like a simple gaming console but it has an enormous potential of becoming much more. Some geeks are already exploring its capabilities.

Johnny Lee has developed an amazing head tracking system that I, as an architect, start to imagine numerous of ways to implement in spatial visualization.

Path of the midnight sun

In Denmark, we have nice long summer days where the sun sets around 11 pm. And even further up north the sun never sets.

These images shows the path of the midnigt sun created by Isilmetriel on her trip to Scandinavia.

Send a message into outer space!

In April your message can be launched into outer space!

Students from Hyper Island in Stockholm has - in collaboration with the Swedish Space Corporation - conceived a project - Space is the limit - that gives you the opportunity to write a message that will be put onboard a rocket and send into outer space! Really!

Watchman's Hut promo

Watchman's Hut is a non-profit project for a proposal for a guest artist studio that gives artists the opportunity to commit themselves for a period of exile in pristine nature.

David Basulto from Archdaily asked us whether we would consider convert our manual one-click-next-image slideshow presentation of the Watchman's Hut into a video slideshow.

We thought that was a great idea.

So here it is!

Music from sand

Sounds created by sand. The sand sounds composed to create music. The result is music from sand by Diego Stocco.

He says "I had some sandbags in the backyard that I used in November during a rainy day. I was moving them to a different spot when I heard the noise of the sand. I thought that maybe I could try a new sound design technique so I bought some piezo film transducers and started to experiment with them.

The entire track is created only out of tuned sand tones. No additional sounds or waveforms.
I emphasized the inner notes of the sand grains and mapped them on a sampler as a series of instruments. The grooves are all played live with various techniques, including taping two piezo films to my fingers."

Very nice idea and crisp sounds.

Amazing Miniature Worlds

Anybody who has worked with architectural models can relate to this... I love it!

It's the most amazing tilt-shift footage I've ever seen.

Well done Keith Loutit!

How to annihilate the world

Container Origami

Nice!

There are thousands of designs and proposals on how to reuse a shipping container... but I've never seen anything like this!

The Container Origami is folly made out of a folded 40ft container.

The Container Origami is created by Wouter Roeterink, Ron Nout, Femke Bijlsma and Allard Roeterink from the Netherlands.

Lamp Plant

The Soil Lamp (or as I would call it Lamp Plant) is a lamp that runs on mud and water.

The creator, Marieke Staps, claims that "the metabolism of biological life produces enough electricity to keep a LED lamp burning. The mud is enclosed in various cells. These cells contain copper and zinc that conduct the electricity.... The only thing the lamp needs is a splash of water every now and then"

That's amazing! And it looks great... I wonder how it looks with mud in it.

I wonder how much it costs to produce or buy one of these...?

The puzzle that would make Erno Rubik cry

I love puzzles. I love the rubiks cube. But this is ridiculous!

Why would anybody construct their own dodecahedron puzzle??

We should ask Andrew Cormier, the designer of the Pentaminx Dodecahedral Puzzle that would make Ernő Rubik Cry.

There are 975 individual parts not including the 1,212 stickers that each had to be placed by hand, one at a time.

Overall the Petaminx took about 75 hours to complete including the molding process, cleaning the parts, assembly and finish.

Here are the instructions on how to construct your own Pentaminx.

Below is a video of the Pentaminx in action.

Footprints of faith

An amazing image from Tibet's Great Prayer Festival

"Footprints carved in wood, which locals believe were made by a worshipper who prayed at the same spot for decades, are seen at a monastery near Tongren, Qinghai province February 5, 2009. Local Tibetan monks and pilgrims gather to celebrate Monlam, or Great Prayer Festival, one of the most important festivals in Tibetan Buddhism."

Wonderland - A handbook for the small architecture firms.

Wonderland is sort of a handbook for small architecture firms.

Unlike other architectural magazines that celebrate new projects on glossy pages, Wonderwall focuses on the "how" of the profession and not the "what".

The first issue is about "getting started".

I should've read it a year ago when we started our firm - JAJA. Perhaps we could've dodged some bullets and had a smoother ride.

Failure, bring it on!

My old teacher told me that "if you don't get frustrated in the design proces... you won't evolve".

So along that line O.K. Periodicals' next issue is about failure.

They state..

"How I learned to appreciate my mistakes"

"Failure can be frustrating. Chance and error are out there waiting to annoy you, striking at the moment when you are least prepared. However, when you start to see failure as an option, you'll be surprised what it can lead to. Away with perfectionism, come on over failure! After all, the imperfect human world is much more interesting than any perfectly rendered digital version. This magazine will show you how to appreciate (your) mistakes, and make them work for you."
